Dad’s Birthday Night at Otaru Ryotei Kuramure (หลงญี่ปุ่นตุลา 57)

Kuramure is an excellent mixture of authentic Japanese onsen and modern services. It nestles away beside a babbling little brook next to a lush mountain backdrop. This is more of a unique designer place. The exterior is imposing and industrial looking (factory/warehouse) but very modern. The interior is a combination of Japanese and industrial minimalist design.

We booked a maisonette (two-storey) layout Japanese western-style room, having western beds upstairs and a tatami room with a separate living area downstairs. From the room, we could look out to a Japanese garden. There was a natural stream running behind the garden, therefore when we opened the window, we could hear such a serene sound of water.

The room had a fabulous private onsen bathtub and the windows next to the tub can be fully opened to the outdoors. The small touches of this hotel were lovely: welcome tea, sweets in the room, interesting brown coloured ‘hotel attire’ and industrial looking 2-piece pyjamas instead of the typical yukata.

The room was stocked with all kinds of amenities we could think of, and beer in the fridge was also complimentary. Unfortunately, we did not drink any.

Dinner was too expensive to try. So, we went outside looking for a local restaurant and came back for a birthday cake moment at our room. Then, we enjoyed our time at the library and the services at the bar where all beverages, snacks and ice-cream were inclusive.

Breakfast, included in the room rate, was very impressive, trays assembled with many small plates offering a lot to like and some curiosities as well. We were seated in an individual enclosed room to enjoy our meal.

Dad’s Birthday night this year with his lovely children and beloved wife was just beyond words amazing!
